What kind of institution is NHL Stenden?

A university of applied sciences

NHL Stenden is a Dutch university of applied sciences. This means that education is strongly connected to professional practice.

Students combine theory with real assignments, projects and collaboration with companies and organisations. They develop professional knowledge as well as practical, communication and teamwork skills.

Through NHL Stenden’s Design-Based Education approach, students investigate real questions, develop ideas, test possible solutions and improve their work through feedback.

Applied sciences or research university?

Universities of applied sciences focus mainly on:

  • practical and career-focused learning;
  • professional skills;
  • projects and teamwork;
  • collaboration with industry;
  • preparation for professional practice.

Research universities generally place greater emphasis on:

  • academic theory;
  • scientific research;
  • independent academic study.

Both types of university can lead to a bachelor’s degree. The main difference is the way students learn.

Understanding this distinction is an important first step when choosing where and how to study in the Netherlands.

Study areas and programmes

NHL Stenden offers a range of English-taught bachelor’s and master’s programmes for students who want to combine academic knowledge with practical and professional experience.

Programmes are offered in fields including business, hospitality, tourism, information technology, logistics, media and design, education, governance and the creative industries.

All programmes have a September intake, while some selected programmes may also offer a February intake.

Business, Hospitality & Tourism

Explore programmes such as International Business, Business Administration, Hospitality Management and Tourism Management. These programmes combine academic knowledge with practical projects, internships and international experience.

People & International Education

International Human Resource Management and International Teacher Education offer more specialised routes for students interested in people, organisations, psychology and international education.

Bachelor’s programmes generally take four years, although some programmes may offer a three-year track. Master’s programmes may be offered as one-year full-time or two-year part-time programmes. Programme availability and entry conditions depend on the individual course.

International opportunities

Studying at NHL Stenden can extend far beyond the campus in the Netherlands. Students can add an international dimension to their studies through overseas minors, exchange programmes, short international programmes and internships abroad.

Through the Grand Tour programme, students may have the opportunity to study a minor in locations such as South Africa, Thailand, Italy, Bali or Aruba.

This gives students the opportunity to develop professionally while experiencing different cultures and international working environments.

Space to study, live and grow

Studying abroad is not only about the programme. The place where students live, the people around them and the support available can strongly influence their experience.

The northern Netherlands offers a balanced student lifestyle, with space, accessible cities and nearby nature. Students can focus on their studies while still becoming part of an active international community.

NHL Stenden brings together students from more than 100 nationalities. Small classes, approachable lecturers and contact with fellow students help create a community in which international students can settle in and build new connections.
