Study in the Netherlands
FOR STUDENTS AND FAMILIES IN KOREA
UNDERSTAND THE SYSTEM & FIND THE ROUTE THAT FITS
The Netherlands offer internationally oriented education, a wide range of English-taught programmes and a learning culture that values independence, active participation and practical application.
For students and families in Korea, the first step is understanding how Dutch higher education works — especially the difference between research universities and universities of applied sciences. KramerConsult provides local guidance to help you explore the options and make an informed choice.
International study environment
Many programmes are taught in English and classrooms often bring together students from different countries, cultures and perspectives.
Practical and active learning
Dutch higher education encourages students to participate actively, work independently and apply what they learn through projects, assignments and real-world challenges.
Independent thinking
Students are expected to ask questions, contribute ideas and take responsibility for their own progress — with lecturers providing guidance rather than simply giving instructions.
UNDERSTANDING DUTCH HIGHER EDUCATION
Research University or University of Applied Sciences?
Choosing between these two types of institution is one of the most important decisions when considering higher education in the Netherlands. The difference is mainly about how you learn and what the programme prepares you for.
Research Universities
Research universities focus primarily on academic study, theory and research.
Students work extensively with academic literature, research methods and independent study. Bachelor’s programmes generally take three years and often provide a direct route towards a master’s degree.
Typical emphasis:
- academic theory and analysis;
- scientific research;
- independent study;
- preparation for advanced academic study.
Universities of Applied Sciences
Universities of applied sciences focus more strongly on applying knowledge in professional contexts.
Bachelor’s programmes generally take four years and often include projects, practical assignments, internships and collaboration with companies or organisations.
Typical emphasis:
- practical and career-focused learning;
- professional skills;
- projects and teamwork;
- internships and industry collaboration.
Neither type is simply “better” or “higher”. They represent different approaches to higher education, and the right choice depends on the student, the subject and future plans.Understanding this distinction is an important first step when choosing where and how to study in the Netherlands.
English-taught study options
The Netherlands offers a wide range of bachelor’s and master’s programmes taught in English, across fields such as business, engineering, technology, design, hospitality, social sciences and many others.
Programme structure, admission requirements and available intakes vary by institution and field of study. It is therefore important to look beyond the programme title and consider the type of institution, the learning approach and how well the programme fits your future plans.
Before choosing a programme
Finding an attractive programme is only part of the decision. For international students, the right choice also depends on academic fit, practical feasibility and timing.
1. Academic fit
Look beyond the programme title. Compare the curriculum, teaching approach, level of independence expected and whether the programme matches your academic background and future goals.
2. Budget & practical planning
Tuition fees are only part of the total cost. Housing, health insurance, daily living expenses and travel should all be considered before deciding whether a study plan is realistic.
3. Admission & timing
Entry requirements, English-language requirements, application deadlines and available intakes differ by programme and institution. Starting early gives you more options and time to prepare the required documents.
A good study choice is not simply about finding a university you like — it is about finding a route that is academically suitable, financially realistic and practically achievable.

Explore a different route to international education
Explore a different route to international education
For many students and parents in Korea, a Dutch University of Applied Sciences — or an international boarding school such as Eerde — may be a less familiar option.
These routes can offer something quite different: internationally oriented education, close interaction with teachers, practical and independent learning, and preparation for further study or an international career.
KramerConsult provides information and guidance on Hanze University of Applied Sciences, NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences and Eerde International Boarding School.
The next free information session will take place in Busan on Saturday 21 November 2026 and will focus on study opportunities at Hanze and NHL Stenden.
Information about Eerde can also be provided on request during this session. A separate information session for students and parents specifically interested in international boarding-school education will be announced later.
Registration is now open.
